“Mom, I’m not acting out. I’m a witch! I-I can make pencils float. And I can summon the four elements. Okay, two, but four soon. A-and I’m dating a musician.” (excerpt from “Gingerbread”)
First thought…shocked disbelief.
This can’t possibly be happening. I’m not surrounded by an angry torch-wielding mob. I’m not on top of a pyre made of forbidden books. I’m not bound by ropes to a stake. I’m not betrayed to my death by my often absent mother. I’m not. I’m not!
Second thought…overwhelming fear.
The ropes are cutting into me. I can’t catch my breath. The fire is coming closer. My heart feels like it will beat its way out of my chest. Why mother, why? I can feel the heat. I can’t breathe! Please let me go! Oh no, my clothes are on fire! It burns. It burns!
Someone help me! Please, I promise to be good forever and eat all my vegetables and always rewind before returning tapes and I’ll never hurt another living thing again if only you will let me go.
“Goddess Hecate! Goddess Diana! I implore thee! Protect and Deliver your daughter from this evil! Deliver me. DELIVER ME!”
Someone heard. The magic swelled in answer to the heartfelt plea.
And like that…she was gone.
