Sam picked up the large box off the desk and turned to Willow, “A few supplies?”
She smiled, “There are a few other knick knacks that I had them put in. Stop complaining and be the big manly man I know you can be.”
“You women always take advantage of us men, I think it’s the big innocent eyes, gets us every time.” Sam laughed as the two headed towards the door.
Willow stepped in front of him and opened the door, “Who said my eyes were innocent?”
“I'm not saying they are, they just look it.” Sam walked out the door and Willow followed catching up with his pace.
“Do I scare you?”
“Why would you ask me something like that?”
“Your father isn’t scared of me, I think Dean puts up a good front, but you're the only one who hasn’t really talked to me and I want to know why.”
“I don’t think you're scary, I haven’t really said anything because I don’t know what to say. I have all these questions about you that I'm not sure you would be happy to answer.”
“I don’t care, everything was open when it came to my friends and I. Something happened, even if it was extremely personal we knew about it. It wasn’t always the best thing, but we always knew what to do if something bad happened.”
“So you wouldn’t mind me drilling you?”
“Dean already did it, so no I don’t mind.”
“Did you try to end the world?”
“You Winchester men always get right down to business.” Willow shook her head, “Yes I did once upon a time, good thing I found a better way to work it out this time.”
“What do you mean by that?”
“I did it because I lost someone I loved… this guy named Warren wanted to be the big bad in town, but he wasn’t smart enough to do it from afar. He decided after getting his butt kicked by my friend Buffy many, may times, that the best way to get rid of his problem is to do it the easy way, with a gun. At this point, Buffy, her sister Dawn, and myself all lived in the same house, my girlfriend moved out a few months before because of my excessive magic use, but we had gotten past everything and made up. We finally had the will to get dressed and leave the house when all of a sudden, there were these loud bangs… a split second later and she was gone. I still remember her last words, ‘your shirt’, she was a very good person, and it hurts even now to think that she was cheated and the only thing she could think of before the end was my shirt was stained.
“I tried to bring her back, I tried so hard but you cannot bring back a natural death. If a human kills a human its natural order and there is no bringing them back. I wanted revenge, I wanted him to realize what he had done and paid. Sad thing is; revenge isn’t the best thing when you get it, after I had killed him I was still empty, even going after his friends and almost killing mine, I was still empty. Factor in that I had this major power boost and I was connected so deeply into the earth that I was feeling everything, I came up with the big plan of ending it all. Would have done it too if it wasn’t for the meddling of my friend Xander, could have gotten him killed, but everything would have been over with if he didn’t stand up to me.”
“You fought your friend and he won?”
“No, my friend stood up to me, he didn’t try to fight me, he jumped in front of me and told me if I was going to end the world to start with him. I tried to make him move, I cut him and threw him, but he kept getting back up and saying that he loved me. That was a real ego boost for him later when he got to brag about how he saved the world.”
“I don’t know what to say about all that.”
“You don’t have to say anything, take it how you want. You can hate me for it if you want. Only reason I told you is because we might be together for a while and I do use the end the world line to scare the baddies. You know it was kinda strange that the demon didn’t know me, in fact his whole energy felt different.”
“Maybe he isn’t from here; we’re kinda new to this whole alternate dimension thing. Most of what we fight is spirits and a few demons; you make me feel like I have no experience and I've been doing this longer.”
“Well you become best friends with a vampire slayer and find out how much things change when there's end of the world prophecies and big master vampires coming after you.”
“Maybe I don’t want the experience then.” Sam shifted the box as Willow opened the door, “Maybe I should just run to a corner and hide.”
“Well if you ever want a lucrative job in the field of the supernatural I offer benefits.”
Sam turned towards Willow, “What are you talking about?”
“The watchers council, see it was blown up awhile back and most of the watchers were hunted down and killed. After we defeated the first evil, we had to form a new council to deal with all the newly activated slayers. We’re kinda short on experienced people to help train them, we have a school now but it’s not enough. There are too many slayers for us to deal with and some slayers can’t just drop everything and leave for London. It wouldn’t be just training either; you would get to fight some actual baddies while doing it. I wasn’t going to say anything till after everything was done but I guess I should tell you first cause it would give you some time to think about it.”
“So it’s a job offer?” She nodded, “Dad and Dean would probably jump at the chance to get paid for this, I don’t know, I had hoped to go back to school. I guess I do need time to think about it.”
Willow put a hand on his arm, “You can still go back to school, and it would be helpful considering some of the slayers want to go to college. I know you wouldn’t need any extra training for it, at the most you would need some extra time learning about various demons and dimensions.”
“What would my Dad and Dean need?”
“Same thing, there is a lot that you all don’t know about demons and prophecies; you never know this could be a prophecy and we not even know it.” Willow stared at the door lost in thought, “Oh! Why hadn’t I thought of this before, this could be a prophecy! It could t ell us how to kill this demon! Go on in, I need to set up my laptop.”
Willow all but pushed Sam through the door and impatiently opened the box, she first pulled out a black bag in which Sam guessed contained her computer, followed by a small red book, candles and a black bag that made clanking sounds as she sat it on the bed. Willow then placed the box on the floor and pulled out two crossbows, a small case containing bolts and four other small boxes. After emptying the box Willow sat on the bed and first opened one by one the boxes, which contained three separate pieces that she constructed into swords, putting them together one by one and then disassembling them and putting them back into their case. She then checked each crossbow, pulling each line and firing.
“What? You can’t go out with untested weapons, its bad luck.” She said looking up at Sam.
Willow stacked the weapons on the far side of the bed and then went through the black bag, pulling out various herds and oils. “That’s everything for the spell; I guess all we have to wait for is night.”
“What about the computer?”
“Actually you can help me with it, in case you do decide to join the council, you would be using the database and if you don’t I guess it still wouldn’t hurt for you to know a little bit more about evil.” She unzipped the case and opened the computer turning it on.
Sam sat next to her on the bed, “So how do I get into the database?”
“If you even know the site address you're doing better than the rest of the world. Everything on here is done with login and passwords. We even have a section for slayers to take online tests if they aren’t attending the school.” Willow pulled up a page and logged on, “The site is divided into sections, there is an area for the student slayers, and then faculty. There is also the research database, largest site on the internet for identifying demons, by race and by known names, vampires, spirits and prophecies. Which is this section,” Willow clicked on a link and then another, “We have all prophecies divided into sub sections and there is also a way to search by keyword, which I am going to do now.” She started typing. “So let’s put in fire, babies, psychic… anything else?”
“How about you add demons, temperature fluctuations, cattle deaths, and electrical storms.”
“Are those his signs?”
“Yeah that and I think that I'm somewhat connected to him.”
Willow looked up at Sam, “Why?”
“Because I get visions and the closer we got to the demon, the more frequent and stronger they are.”
Willow typed everything and set the search, “Well it may take awhile because of the amount of prophecies that are stored on here. You know it took me six months just to put everything on here.”
“How many are there?”
“A few thousand, I basically put in everything that I came across. Some are for reference because they’ve already been fulfilled, but a good majority of them haven’t even been in play yet.”
“So you're used to dealing with these kinds of things?”
“Since I was sixteen, it was one of the things that came with being friends with the slayer.”
“Why do you do it…? I mean why did you give up a simple life for this?”
“Well how can I not, if you knew that the end of the world was coming and you could do something to stop it would you? Would you give up your life to save everyone else? This was the choice I made almost ten years ago when I first found out about vampires, I didn’t want to just sit around and be scared of what lurked in the night. I wanted to help fight, at first I didn’t know that it would be what I would do for the rest of my life, but a circumstances changed and I grew up and discovered my powers, there was nothing else for me to do. I went to college and I still fought, I eventually plan to go back, I have even been taking online classes, but Sam if giving all of this up means that somehow the evil might win, why turn away from it? Why would I run when I knew that it could mean the end of the world? This is about more than just you and me, this is about every life that is saved because I got rid of just one vampire, or one demon, or even one hell goddess. It all adds up.”
“I know, it’s just I've never had any kind of normalcy in my life, hunting has always been what we were supposed to do. For that short period of time that I was normal, I was in college, had my girlfriend, worried only about grades and money, I was happy, I was happier than I had been my whole life. I was finally normal and then Dean came and everything was back to what it used to be. I came back to finish this demon, to get my revenge for taking away my life, this thing came onto my home and killed my mother, and then it did the same to my girlfriend.”
“Look Sam, don’t make up your mind right now, give it some time before you decided what you really want to do. I only have one more thing to say to you; someone with your gifts, especially someone who was a target as a child, there will always be someone after you, there is no way to turn your back on this. I think there's more to you than what meets the eye, there's more than just your visions, maybe it just takes time for them to fully develop, I mean how many children actually survived and made it to old age?” Willow got up off the bed and started to set up a circle on the floor.
Sam turned on the bed to face her, “I only know about one, he could use all his powers; that was actually the first time I used mine. I was trapped in a closet and I saw Dean killed and then the dresser in front of the door just moved. It moved because I wanted it to, because I had to save my brother.”
“I have one way of finding out what you are capable of, but you have to trust me for that.”
“What is it?”
“It’s sorta like combining our power but it’s just a way for me to feel what's inside of you. Right now, you are not projecting anything, I can feel a little power but not too much, actually I think your father and Dean exude more power than you do.”
“They have powers?” Sam smiled in disbelief.
“Well actually everyone has some kind of power, especially if you are constantly around things that are supernatural, it’s kind of like learning another language, if you are around people who speak Spanish, eventually you will learn to speak Spanish. You on the other hand, give off this unsettling muteness, like its nothing there. When I healed you I felt something but I think it was just what was on the horizon.”
“What do you mean by that?”
Willow rose from the floor and walked up to Sam, “I think you are capable of a lot more than just moving furniture and seeing the future.”
