Review of chapter "Chapter Thirty-One: A Brief Reprieve" from MarcusSLazarus
Review:
Firstly, interesting story you've had so far; VERY promising indeed.
True, I thought the part where Professor Xavier fell victim to that attack of the Master's after he, Scott, Xander and Angel had managed to drag Buffy out of her coma was a bit excessive- there comes a point where you risk making the bad guy almost TOO powerful if he's able to keep hanging on after everything the Master's gone through by then-, but that aside, it's been pretty good so far. The characterisation is excellent, the relationships between the two groups are very believeable, and the ideas behind how the two worlds combine are BRILLIANT.
(Particularly the part where Scott's eye-beams instantly vapourise vampires as they're based on solar energy absorbed by his body; on the surface, it's so simple that anyone could have thought of it, but, as Terry Pratchett once said, "men who can invent things that anyone could have thought of are very rare men.")
Plus, of course, the confrontation with the Brotherhood was BRILLIANT; only Buffy could go from insulting Toad to acting grossed out at the implication that she and Scott are dating THAT rapidly.
I have to wonder how things will develop if the Brotherhood track her to Sunnydale; if nothing else, Angel VS Sabretooth could turn out to be a rather... interesting match-up, to say the least.
On the topic of the powers issue you mentioned here, I'd favour having Buffy possess something similar to her cousins' abilities to generate energy blasts by absorbing sunlight; maybe she can take the 'absorbing solar energy' thing to the next step and generate sunlight as both an offensive 'beam' weapon- much like Havok can do so in the comics- and simply as a source of illumination when she's in the dark?
After all, it WOULD help with her slaying- able to take out multiple vampires without even needing to resort to stakes-, to say nothing of giving her a reason to stay with the X-Men for a bit while she works on getting control...
Maybe she could even stay long enough to get involved in General Stryker's little scheme to use his version of Cerebro?
I mean, hey; Buffy VS Lady Deathstrike? Can you honestly say that a fight like that WOULDN'T be cool (To say nothing of how she might react to encountering Nightcrawler)?
Update soon!

You live!
I like the idea of Buffy teaching the kids some basic moves. I think it'd be... interesting, hehe.
Comments from author:
Yes, I live. Glad to see that you hadn't given up on this story...because I sure haven't. Just been a little busy. And as for Buffy teaching the kids...who better? *grin*

Great story! I hope it's not to late to vote, but if it is, oh well. Well, I like option C the best. I think having the Slayer power is quite enough for one person to handle.

great story do far. I'd go this A and give her feral powers that are being repressed and find a way to over come it. I think feral powers would be good because slayers are hunters and protective of whats theirs like a big jungle cat.

more please

Review:
Well, since it is a X-men crossover, I'll vote A. My suggestion power is something energy-based like fire or lightning.

Great story. I'll look forward to reading more.

How do I know I'm hooked on your story? I just went through all 30 chapters in one day.
I like the idea of how you've got Buffy and the X-men working together, and I can't wait to see her meet Logan (teehee!).
Comments from author:
You went through all 30 chapters in one day? *tips hat to you* That's a pretty major accomplishment. Congrats.

I'm glad you like the story thus far. I don't know if I'll have her meet Logan or not yet, but I'll keep the idea in mind for future chapters. And yes, they'll be working a lot more together (Buffy and the X-Men, that is).

I vote for C. Buffy doesn't need any more headaches or responsibilities other than the one she has. Nice emotional chapter. Interesting to see where you take this in the sequel.
Comments from author:
Your vote is noted. Don't know if I'll do a sequel or not yet, but I'm toying with the idea. Thanks for the review.

OMG I just had a brainwave. I was reading your other reviews after I wrote mine and noticed a comment you left on one of them referencing "divine" Buffy... what if you take that literally? Every item she touches becomes 'divine' and therefore blessed (like a cross) for a short period of time. She could bless her own holy water for her friends, and to dust a vamp she'd only have to touch them because then their entire body would become blessed. She could also touch her friends before going out on patrol and a vamp wouldn't be able to touch or bite them without getting burned as if touching a cross. But, it's something that would have no effect whatsoever on the mutant world, and outside of fighting vamps would leave her no more powerful than her regular slayer powers.

It would also mess substantially with her love life. She could never have skin to skin contact with Angel or Spike. lol
Comments from author:
Interesting suggestion. I'll keep it in mind.

I just wandered across this story the other day and I have to say I love it! It's a great way to cross the two worlds and you've done it really well.

In regards to the poll. I don't really know what I want to happen here. either she's ONLY the Slayer with no mutant powers, or she's a mutant, but with no powers separate (at this time) because the active slayer gene represses the mutant gene.

Now that she's not the "active slayer" anymore (ie: the slayer line doesn't go through her anymore, it goes through Kendra and then Faith.) Maybe her mutant power which has been kept dormant will be allowed to surface. You could even have Giles find some references to a past potential that ended up being a mutant, and when she was called, her mutant power disappeared to be replaced by her slayer powers. (Maybe Niki Wood since you mentioned earlier in the fic that the mutations have only been around for two generations. Am I remembering that correctly?)

If she does end up getting a separate power, I think it would be good if she got something that she could use fighting vampires, but it would also be fun if she got something weak and completely useless to her. She's used to being this super powerful one, and to get this wussy little power would be funny in the story. Maybe she gets the ability to mentally communicate with housecats (and only housecats) or something like that. lol or maybe rats... actually rats would be helpful to her because of the large population of Sunnydale demons living in the sewers... Anyway... my point was lost long ago so I'll stop here.

Great story!
Comments from author:
I'm glad you liked the story after you discovered it. I've been enjoying writing it and finding comparisons and similarities that I didn't even realize existed until after I sat down and started hammering this one out.

I did mention earlier in the story that mutations (in this incarnation (i.e. granting superpowers)) have only been around for two generations, by which I mean Professor X and Magneto's generation and the generation that Buffy and Scott and the other X-Men belong to. That may not be true to comic-canon, but I just felt that if they had been around any longer, a lot more would have been known about them, and tensions would have been a lot higher than portrayed in the movies.

As for giving Buffy a wussy power...well, I have a feeling that won't happen, based on the other suggestions that I've seen thus far. While it would be funny, I think that she has a genetic inclincation for major powers (her cousins are Cyclops and Havok after all and neither of them is a light-weight), and I don't think it would be believable.

Glad you liked the story though, and keep reading and reviewing!

Cool! I love polls like this! I vote A, with abilities similar to Psylocke. If going Pyrokinetic, like alot of others have voted, I suggest that the abilities are more along the line of the Firestarter movies (while that is an enormously strong Power, it would also be one Buffy would treat with a GREAT deal of respect. having the potential to reconstruct the Big Bang would not conduct itself to Buffy being careless, as she has a VERY strong sense of duty, even with duties she hates).
Comments from author:
I'm glad you like polls. I've never seen Firestarter unfortunately, but I do agree that whatever power Buffy ends up with, she'd treat it with a great deal of respect. Thanks for the review, and don't forget to keep reading and reviewing.

Review:
Hmm, either A: she has some other ability *giggles* besides shopping. Maybe *ponders* empathy or *considers* minor shape shifting.

Or
B: what if she isn't really the Slayer, she just has this mutation. *hmms* Maybe the Council exploits the 'Slayers' girls who show this mutation. . . perhaps they have some way of tracking them down when they show their mutation- up to you whether every Potential is a Slayer, or if they are all just mutants of a different sort- why not all of them are Called, only those with the 'Slayer' mutation are Ca;;ed. The Council can tell that a girl is a mutant, just not what flavor.

*grins*

Forget about A. I kinda like B.

Review:
I like option A, her being a dormant mutant the Slayer/Chosen One could have been blocking the X-gene before, but now that the next Slayer is called i.e. Kendra, that block can now be gone. This would explain why her past experiences have not activated her mutant powers before. As for the power itself, a healing factor like Claire Bennett from "Heroes" would be very useful, with out overpowering her.

Please update both this and "Lost and Found" again soon.
Comments from author:
Thanks for the review, and don't worry, both stories will be updated soon enough.
