I have to say the last few chapters were a bit disappointing, Xander dragged himself back to Sunnydale to 'save the day' but some how making no real difference on anything? Same people die, same people get away and it's all like Xander might as well not been changed in first place. Plus I always found 'distrustful Buffy and Giles' a bit foolish, they trusted Angel, they believed in Angelus being able be saved, they even trusted a 'chipped spike' enough to not dust him on sight for past crimes. Why the heck would they be so against Xander if he changed?
Buffy has always 'loved thy enemy' to much yet she hates her friends, what ever happened to the 'he has a soul he's good' crap she always spewed? It's not like Angel was some great hero, he did nothing in century or so of unlife with a soul before he started stalking Buffy. Sure Angel became a champion, but he wasn't already one when Buffy started to defend how great and good Angel was. You also have to question fact that Angel fights for a prize, becoming human and basically being with Buffy, constantly gives up hope and piddles around if looks like he's not going get his reward.
Over all I have say Xander should never gone back to Sunnydale for the Angelus arc if he was not going make a real difference, he should staked the vamp without Buffy's knowledge and moved on. It's also a joke that an idiot like Angelus who foiled by a teenage cheer leader and some part time vampire slayers could out maneuver and avoid 'ancient powerful Xander' like this chapter suggest for so long. It's also one the funniest bits of Buffy-verse. Buffy killed 'the master' the proclaimed oldest and most powerful vampire by end of first season or so with almost no effort after her near death experience. Yet EVERYONE seems have so much trouble with a mere two hundred or so year old vampire? Angelus, Spike, Drusilla etc are constant pains in the butt that no one seems to be able finish off despite being overwhelmingly showy and stupid in their actions and hundreds to thousands of years less powerful than the Master, Krakitost etc.
However, ten will get you twenty that Buffy tries to brow beat him into either not killing, or re-cursing Angelus... Or she out-and-out blindsides him and makes him lose his concentration.
Keep up the great work!

this is both cool and confusing as hell. you're not sticking to the AB rules, are you?
Comments from author:
Nope. Xander is a rule unto himself. I am psuedo-planning to do whatever the hell I want and screw the canon rules. Xander doesn't know the rules, and is inexperienced in his powers, so I figure he can do whatever pops into his head.
I think that any incarnation of Xander likes blowing things up! HAHAHA! It's good that he laid the situation out for Buffy in a way that she would understand. Angel was gone and facing his judgement. Angelus was likely to stake out Joyce to get to Buffy. She can't say 'but he's got a soul' because Angelus doesn't.
Comments from author:
The thing with canon S2 that I hated is that everyone is on Buffy's side. Normally I'm not a Buffy-basher, but the way only her feelings were considered, and everyone forgets about how Giles explained why Jesse had to be staked just does not make sense to me. So I am making Xander a bit callous and very pragmatic.

I wonder if there is an inverse curve when comparing demonic strength to intelligence? I mean the Judge and Acathla have only one thing on their mind and if you discount their primary ability they have almost nothing. I wonder if the reason Xander had not tried to call the Judge was that he did not think he was strong enough to stop an Apocolypse level demon. The True Demon the Mayor shifts into even if it is strong and powerful is almost ALL about the hunger and if human intelligence is almost completely wiped out.
If you do not use it in the story can you at least consider an Omake with Xander playing fetch with his pet Olvikan?
