Review of chapter "12. What Dawn saw from the ruins." from AllenPitt
Review:
can't help but wonder what would happen if a vampire tried to sire a martian. ok, I'm over it now.
Gee, Dawn had better come up with something soon or the situation might become serious!
Comments from author:
Situation might become serious? Oh come on now, no need for that sort of talk! Things are a long way from serious!

Cheers,
DaveT.

Review:
“Vampires, Miss,” Amy hissed her voice full of anger and hate, “I gotta slay the bastards!”
That's the spirit Amy... but you're gonna need a bigger & powerful weapon than a tiny little piece of wood... maybe an GAU-8 Avenger gattling =D???.
Cool chapter, see ya!!
Comments from author:
No! She just needs a bigger stake!

Plucky girl, Amy. But I'm not too sure how she is going to stake all the Vampires From Mars!
Comments from author:
She'll do it with typical British pluck and resolve...

You'll find out on Sunday!

Yes, that's going to be the Slayer reaction. Wonder what any surviving vamps in the area will make of the competition...
Comments from author:
I think most vamps would be 'anti' Martian...but what are they going to do about it? Wave banners and protest just before they're turned into little piles of ash?

Cheers,
DaveT.

Review of chapter "11A: HMS MARS." from PATM
Review:
Awesome chapter and it rivaled "Sink the Bismarck" in detail and characterization. This is fun to
read. Must wait for more. Darn it! Buffy is exceedingly calm, Willow is a twit and Giles
really would know better.
Comments from author:
Not long to wait!

You say the nicest things!

Cheers,
DaveT.

PS: Hmmm now there's a thought...Buffy meets 'Sink the Bismarck'!!!!

Review:
Lovely. Death to all invaders and God protect the Royal Navy! I liked the irony of the HMS Mars taking out three Martian war machines. Too bad the Mars didn't have a few of the technical gadgets of her spiritual offspring a certain USS Enterprise. Aircraft carriers or starships, it doesn't matter. I always wondered what the Martians thought when they first saw the sea after they landed.

When we went into the gas chamber for training, we did the name, rank, and service number after removing our masks. And if the cadre was feeling especially nasty, they made us sing Christmas carols. But CS sure does clear out the sinuses. Lol!
Comments from author:
Great ships the old pre-Dreadnoughts. There's only one left and that's in Japan. Now USS Enterprise would be a shook for the Martians, phasering the gun back on Mars.

When our instructors wanted to be nasty, after we did the Name, rank and Number bit they just say, "Sorry didn't catch that!' Evil sods.

Cheers,
DaveT.

When I saw that this was the naval action, I fired up my vinyl copy of Jeff Wayne and listened to "Thunderchild" while I read it. Great chapter.
Comments from author:
Good gods! A Vinyl copy of Jeff Wayne's masterpiece! Mine vanished years ago along with my vinyl recordings of the Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy (the original radio show). If only I had them now...I wouldn't be able to play them coz I've not got a record player anymore...but...!

Cheers,

Review:
neat battle... I always hated the 1950s film where they had force fields and nobody ever managed to even scratch the paint. Kind of necessary as otherwise we'd have nuked them to oblivion or even before that, their tech just wasn't up to snuff. Sounds more like a laser or particle beam gun than a 'heat ray' but what the heck... before the invention of the laser, sf was full of stories about 'heat guns' with only a few writers apparently aware of the inverse square law problem.....
Hm..so if Dawn messes with the timeline to fix things, HG at least remembers it, otherwise he wouldn't have written that novel that hardly anybody ever read..heh.
Will you be doing a sequel based on the "Time Machine" ?
Comments from author:
'Time Machine' is a possibility in fact I've discussed it with a couple of my friends...we'll see. But it'll not be in this series as this one only has two stories left to run.

I'm told that there's an animated film on the stocks set 15-20 years after the WotW's were everyone has heat rays and it sounds like WWI is fought with human built War Machines! How true this is I don't know and that's about all I know about it.

Cheers,
DaveT.

Review:
OK, that's pretty much canon, though I'll try to think of the ship as Thunder Child - nice bit of irony with the ship name though!

About time for the Martian aircraft to turn up - I recall it as being pretty useless, so that isn't much of a spoiler.

Have you read "Sherlock Holmes' War of the Worlds" by Manly Wade Wellman and his son Wade Wellman? Rather a nice pastiche bringing in various Holmes and Prof. Challenger ideas as well as the WotW.
Comments from author:
I've heard of the Sherlock Holmes book but never read it. I mentioned a book in a previous review but I couldn't remember what it was called. I have since found out it was 'The Space Machine' and it details what happened before and during the invasion back on Mars and why there were no more cylinders. As I remember apart from a few anachronisms it was a pretty good read.

Sorry no Martian aircraft, there wasn't really anywhere I could stick it in, and anyway I think it only got two lines in the book.

HMS Mars, the 'Majestics' were some of my favourite pre-Dreadnought battleships I just had to put her in.

Cheers,
DaveT.

This is a great retelling of H.G. Wells story. Like the idea of Wells being a watcher. Also a nice commentary on Victorian London.

Review:
ok, either a vengeance wish or she uses one of her 'words' to win, that's about all they've got left at this point. (this reminds me, there's an animated film in the works about the world +15 years after the Martian invasion -- everybody has death rays and modified tripod types, etc.
Anyway-even Sunnydale syndrome can't cover this, it's going to take some reality-altering. Maybe in the 'present' the Martians can try again and get slaughtered by the military?
Comments from author:
Film sounds interesting.

Well I hope you like my salution!

Review:
Very nice update. I liked Dawn's take on the wonders of Victorian life. I used to hate gas drills in the army. Wearing your total MOPP gear and protective mask for eight hours was a total pain. But not to have any protection from a gas attack would be terrifying. I hope Dawn's magic works against the 'black smoke'. If the idiots on the Council want the Slayer to slay the Martians, they need to give her a way bigger stake. Lol!

Edit: My fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Simpson, was a science fiction fan. She turned a lot of kids in her class into fans since she knew what the 'good stuff' was. My favorite authors were Heinlein, Azimov, Anderson, Norton, and H. Beam Piper. Ah! The days when a kid could read most of the good SF novels in a school year. Lol!
Comments from author:
CS gas the only know cure for the common cold!

Did you have to do the Name, Rank and Number thing in the gas chamber with your mask off?

You were lucky with your teacher or where you went to school; we had to read 'classic' books. Not very interesting for a young teen. Of course in those day the SF section in even a big book store was one shelf! Oddly now I work near a Sci-Fi book store I still find myself going back to stuff I read in my teens. One of the reasons I started writing here was people weren't writing the stuff I wanted to read!

Cheers,
DaveT.

Review:
Now you have me wanting to re-read the original. I don't remember any gas. I think I would prefer if it was an alternative reality rather than Dawn making it as if the invasion never happened.
Comments from author:
It was always refered to as 'Black Smoke' in the book as the concept of 'war gases' wasn't common knowledge. It also didn't act like a true gas.

Alternate reallity eh? Maybe...maybe not.

Cheers,
DaveT.
