What an interesting take on Horatio Caine. We quit watching Miami because after awhile we couldn't stand him. Hubby refers to him as "Boris Whip'emoff" because he never seems to be able to leave his sunglasses on for more than 30 seconds before he puts his head down and takes them off again.
I like the tie-in with Dexter. I well remember the Trinity killer and Frank Lundy. Dex needs to be a little more cautious with his disposal methods.
Comments from author:
Things like the Bay Harbor Butcher case don't just vanish the second someone is apparently found guilty, especially if there is no trial. There would still be a lot of people convinced the Butcher was still around, people looking for evidence that Doakes was framed, and so forth.
The sunglasses bug me too!

I'm delighted to see another chapter of this show up on my screen, and I love how all the crosses mesh seamlessly.
I also like Vince's reaction to the mention of Lt. Caine, and am looking forward to seeing him lock horns with Gibbs. I foresee a great deal of heartburn in his future. ;-)
I believe that it was one of your stories (please correct me if I'm wrong) wherein someone associated with the New Watchers Council referred to him as, given his self-righteousness and arrogance, being a perfect example of a modern-day Puritan.
Can't wait to see how you tie the Scoobies into this. ;-)

In one of my Slayers: CSI series, The Sitter, I think Dawn says that he is way too judgemental and would have been happy burning witches.
The Buffy connection is a little weird, but it will appear eventually.

Nice chapter and I love how you also brought in CSI Miami. It should tie in nice with the three of them. I hated that Lundy died on the show but I like how Forenell is questioning it all in your story. That is a nice twist.
Comments from author:
You can be sure that if this was a real-world serial killer there would be endless questions. These things don't go away in seconds after the apparent criminal dies.

This is unbelievably fun! I'm very impressed at how seamlessly you've gotten everything to blend together. It's like they are all shot in the same universe (like JAG and NCIS)--it doesn't really seem like a crossover. All the characters I'm familiar with (err, the NCIS ones) are spot on.
Hooray! :)

Hope you continue to think this as it gets more complicated.

I'm sorry but I just had to crack up about your characterization of Caine...there's more than one reason why it's the one CSI show I only watch when I'm bored and nothing else is on...that and the fact it's patently shot in LA, unlike other Miami themed shows *cough* Burn Notice *cough* Anyhoo, loving it so far and can't wait to read more.
Comments from author:
Thanks - I'm having fun with it. And Burn Notice will be in here eventually!

A very promising premise. Although a snag is the victim isn't Navy. I'm assuming NCIS stays involved because of the classified aspects of the evidence?
Comments from author:
That, plus some circumstances coming up in the next chapter will affect the case.

Can't wait to see how this plays out (Gibbs vs. Dexter -- isn't that immovable object meets irresistible force, though I'm not sure which is which?). :)
Comments from author:
A bit. But things are going to get VERY complicated.

Excellent beginning, just like ALL your stories. Also as usual, great job with everyone's voices. Sounds like Dex has been a bod boy again. And his 'badness' couldn't have happened to a nicer scumbag. Lol!
Edit: nice research on the Jimmy Carter. I guessed you used it because of the Terminator tie-in.
Comments from author:
No, the Terminator thing was a bonus - I was researching US submarines and towed sonar arrays, thought I'd better start with the recent ones, and the first one I checked was the Carter, which turned out to be especially suitable because of the provision for divers etc. Sometimes you just get lucky...
My first reaction on reading this, was, "a submarine named Jimmy Carter?" American submarines tend to be named after states, or cities. They name aircraft carriers after presidents (usually Republican ones).
But then I did a little checking, and found out that the third Sea Wolf class sub was actually named "Jimmy Carter."
Comments from author:
It's the submarine seen in season 2 of Terminator: TSCC, but I picked it because Wikipedia mentions that it's equipped for SEAL operations, with modifications that make it easy to put divers and ROVs into the water; most submarines aren't.
