Review of chapter "Getting To Know You" from Difdi
Review:
> "No martial arts." Jon said almost instantly. "Except maybe Krav Maga. Everything else is just about worthless, at least against
> what he'll be facing."

Depends on the martial art. A power style is fairly useless against someone enormously stronger and faster than you. But not all martial arts are power styles.

Aikido for example, is even more about using an opponent's strength against him than Judo is. Basic Aikido is purely defensive, but the advanced levels of it include use of sword and staff as well as being more aggressive overall; The idea is to perfect defense, then once the student can survive almost anything, then you teach how to attack. Aikido is a modernized, expanded version of the unarmed combat style taught to samurai; A samurai who was unarmed in a battle had a problem, and their unarmed fighting skills focused on disarming very skilled swordsmen to use the sword against its owner. An Aikido practitioner will usually take an equally skilled Krav Maga practitioner 4 falls out of 5. Of course, the main drawback to Aikido when compared to Krav Maga is it takes 3 or 4 times longer to reach that skill in Aikido than it does in Krav Maga.

Edited to add:

Punching something with rock for skin and metal bones makes more sense than dodging? As Mr. Miyagi once said, "Remember, best block, not be there!" Aikido includes a lot of dodging, redirecting blows and practical application of momentum in combat. The objective for Xander is to survive a fight; Defense is a priority, and being able to make a highly effective attack and die in the attempt because of a lack of defense is stupid. Aikido as a style is one where it matters very little if your opponent is bigger and stronger than you, making it ideal for small women to use against very large men. This is precisely the situation Xander is in with most demons.

Even something as relatively fragile as a vampire is many times tougher than a human; A blow that outright kills a human probably won't do more than annoy a vampire, for much the same reason that shooting a vampire center mass doesn't work very well. Vampires are already dead. Also, remember that to a vampire, violence is foreplay. And their foreplay involves hitting eachother with four to five times the strength of a strong human. The first priority should be just what Aikido teaches at the most basic level - evasion and redirection. Because Xander can't take a punch like that.
Comments from author:
Perfect defense when you're dealing with critters who are several times bigger, stronger, and faster than you are, and who can poison you or otherwise really screw up your day if they manage to cut you or slime you (which some demons can), and can't be disarmed unless you cut off body parts ... is a really bad idea.

That's why Jim and Jon agree about Krav Maga. It's not defense. It's offense. It concentrates on getting the other guy down and/or dead as fast and efficiently as possible. It teaches essentially no-holds-barred, use whatever is at hand beatdowns.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with other martial arts in 'normal' situations, but Sunnydale is about as far from normal as it's possible to get.

Too bad the gang isn't having as much fun training as I am reading. Of course if you weren't whomping on them I might be having a bit less fun. Oh well.

Wonderful chapters!
This adds so much to the story, I love the training.
I love that Xander and Jon are going to stay with Joyce and Buffy.
I love the reaction of EVERYONE to the council.

Great chapters, thanks!

OMG! You just made my week!!!!! I loved the update!!! I can't believe how well you meshed together all three shows! It was believable and well-done!
I liked how awkward it has been for Jon and Xander to become acclimated to each other, and that it wasn't BAM! and they are comfortable together. But please don't make this a slash fic. I am hopping that they will, over time, have a relationship like Jim and Blair.
Good idea with the training for the scoobies. Sunnydale's "other" residents won't know what hit them!!!
Comments from author:
Rest easy. This will NOT be a Xander/Jon slash fic. If for no other reason than I really can't write romance/sex stuff. Secondly, Jon is the next best thing to asexual thanks to his situation. He's got the mind of a man in his fifties ... and looks sixteen. The thought of going after someone his apparent physical age makes him break out in hives, and no non-skeevy thirty or forty year old (who would be nearer his mental age) would touch someone who looks underage.

Xander and Jon *will* be in each others' physical space a lot more than is normal for two heterosexual guys, but this is because of the whole Sentinel/Guide thing.

Xander will definitely develop a relationship with Jim that will eventually be father/son in all but name. And both he and Jon will come to rely on both Jim and Blair as they figure out the whole Sentinel/Guide thing. And Jon will be thrilled to have another soldier around to talk to, so no worries there.

Now that's what I call an update! :-)

Ch 15: "Nice at meetcha." - I think that's supposed to be 'ta' or 'to'.

Also loved Jim's common sense approach to demon fighting and pointing out the weaknesses in Buffy's game. Not really Giles' fault though, except for being too weak to insist on Buffy training harder.

Great job.
Comments from author:
Gah, my spellchecker probably did that on me when I wasn't looking and I didn't catch it.

And no, it's definitely not Giles' fault at all. For one, the Watchers trained him in traditional methods, and that's all he's got. Worse, on top of that, he is at heart an academic, so even if he wasn't half brainwashed by the Council, he'd still not really be able to train Buffy the way she needs to train because he just doesn't have the necessary mentality. Thank goodness he now has a Ranger and a Spec Forces guy to step in and help. *evil grin*

I'm liking the fic, but I'm really hoping you're not ultimately going to make it a Xander/Jon slash fic. No offence to anyone who likes reads or writes it, it's just not the type of fic I like to read. It would kinda suck having read 16 chapters (and who knows how many more), really getting into the story, only to have that slipped in.

Review:
I'm really enjoying this fic, and loving the way you've mixed 3 series worth of lore to make it all work. However, I'm a bit confused about the timeline for Buffy - if Angel is already in LA, how does Joyce not know about the slaying?

That's a minor quibble, though. Keep up the good work!
Comments from author:
This fic takes place after the end of the first season of Buffy. Angel has by no means headed for L.A. yet, and in canon, Joyce didn't find out about Buffy being the Slayer until Season 3 in canon.

Review:
I really liked it. Good combo of exposition about their training and relevant in media res scenes. Interesting foreshadowing about Jon and Jim growling at a few places that the Scoobies didn't know were or could be threats.
Comments from author:
I had a lot of fun with that, I will admit. Though, I will say this much ... not all the places Jim and Jon were growling at were concentrations of 'bad' demons. Remember, they don't know yet that neutral or non-people-eating, non-world ending type demons exist.
