Review of chapter "Dusty Masters, Part 1" from calikocat
Review:
So this is cool and has me at the edge of my seat because I can't wait until Spike shows up, and for any and all of Xander's run-ins with Larry...and the Frat Boys! *bounces*
Comments from author:
Yeah, Spike is going to be ... interesting. Especially if Angel is shit-stupid enough to try to offer Xander to him as a snack like he did in canon. Jon will rip his freaking eyeballs out, for serious.

That said, I have plans for Spike. Because I like him. Thank god he's got a brain and knows how to use it, unlike Angel, because it will help keep him existing for a while longer than Angel is projected to last.

And yeah, Larry and the frat boys are going to get their clocks cleaned at least once.

I love Joyce joining in and Giles warning everyone about the Watchers' plans for Buffy. But Xander's glee at the way Jon makes Angel too uncomfortable to stick around is beautiful.
Comments from author:
*laughs*

Giles doesn't *know* for sure that the Council wants Buffy dead ... he just strongly suspects it, given the evidence at hand. Which is pretty damning when you think about it.

But yeah, Xander's glee at Angel's discomfiture is just too funny for words. And Joyce is *made* of awesome, really. I mean, holy shit, she took an axe to SPIKE of all people. I firmly believe (as this fic makes clear) that if she'd known the truth, she'dve backed Buffy to the hilt and then some.

Good. I loved how Jon handled Cordelia.

Hopefully, they did something about the overall plumbing in the Summers house when the shower was installed. It would be a shame for them to have to deal with leaky pipes with all of the books.

On future flights, they can save time by flying from Seattle Washington to Oxnard or Santa Barbara instead of LA. Oxnard (pop approx 170,000 at that time) is around an hour's drive south from Sunnydale. According to Whedon, Sunnydale is supposed to be close to Santa Barbara.

Additional thoughts for chapter 16: Training Blues

Xander should consider adding a Kukri and/or a gladius type sword to his personal arsenal.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gladius
Comments from author:
Actually, Sunnydale itself evidently has a small airport, just north of town that they can and will use as needed. They just used LAX during the summer because there was no real time crunch.

The Kukri might become something he uses, yes, having looked at the site. It's a bit more exotic than a KA-Bar, though, which means it'll be a bit before he obtains one ... Jim got the stuff he did at an Army Surplus store, which wouldn't stock kukris.

The gladius ... is going to be a no. Swords overall are going to be rare ... it's harder to obtain and maintain swords capable of surviving heavy combat than it is axes, in this day and age. Worst comes to worst, they can buy and modify woodsplitting axes. Most swords these days are ceremonial or display swords ... finding one built for actual use that isn't a banged-up relic is rather hard. They're also (for the most part, gladiuses are a bit shorter) awkward as hell to cart around compared to other choices. And even if those weren't factors, Xander is more a chopper than a slicer, and axes are *made* for chopping, so they suit his style better.

The meeting with Jim's father was suitably tense. I can definitely see Xander being the one to offer the olive branch. The kids reaction to Jim's gift truck was very entertaining.

"I think I love my father, just a little bit." Xander said, staring at all the loot.

"I think I'm getting a crush on him." Buffy admitted, which made Xander laugh and grimace at the same time.

"Your dad's nearly as bad as I am." Jon said, not looking at all unhappy about the idea. "The only thing missing is explosives, which I'm not about to trust you three with ... yet. Let's get this stuff in the house before the neighbors notice."

Love this bit so much. can't wait for more.
Comments from author:
*laughs* Well, We all know how much Xander, Buffy, and Jack like their weapons. I had to give a nod to it somehow.

Another lovely chapter. The unexpected arrival of William Ellison was interesting and I'm curious to see what happens with that. The plans for the basement renovation sounds awesome and I'm wondering if Cordelia is going to end up with some training since she keeps getting dragged into the mayhem.

Glad to see the update.
Comments from author:
She definitely will get some training. Jon's not about to let anyone who's in on the fight wander around not knowing their ass from their elbow fighting-wise, no matter how much of a diva someone might be.

As for William ... give that one time. He needs to get his head hauled out of his ass, which will take some work, but it'll happen.

I liked the meet and greet with the General. I thought the exchange of information played out fairly realistically. I’m glad you decided to give Xander a bit of help in the healing department. Wandering around Sunnydale in splints would have been very bad. I enjoyed Jim assessing Buffy’s fighting skills. While it is true Giles trains her, I never saw the Watchers Council providing their Watchers with the sort of training Special Forces would get. Joyce threatening to douse Angel with gas and throw a match at him if he hurt her daughter was a thing of beauty. I’m looking forward to seeing where you will take this next.
Comments from author:
Glad you enjoyed it so much!

I sort of adore Hammond, so of course he had to be in on this (ditto Janet. She. Did. Not. Die. Capische?). And I completely agree that being in Sunnydale with his injuries would have been VERY bad. And if sped-up healing hadn't been available, both Jim and Jon would have sat on him to keep him from going back until he *was* healed, because there is no way on Earth either of them would let someone that hurt go into a warzone.

The Council's idea of training seemed to amount to 'this is a stake. Aim for the heart. This is a sword. Aim for the neck' and that was the end of it. Which is about half the reason the girls died inside a year ... they were given crap training. Buffy with Spec Forces-esque training is going to scare the CRAP out of the Sunnydale nightlife. *giggle*

I love Joyce's threat to Angel!
Comments from author:
Yeah. Joyce is badass and I adore her more than a little bit. She went after Spike with and axe, for god's sake. She would have NO problem lighting Angel on fire for messing with her daughter.
