Review of chapter "Snap!" from DesitaniaF
Review:
I was thinking more along the lines of it being a versatile weapon to know, allowing you to improvise a weapon out of a broom handle or conveniently straight branch or piece of rebar from the nearby construction site rather than fighting hagrid. but of any of harry's friends from the magical world, hagrid would be the one who works best as John Little. Next he could find out that the fat friar was Tuck... lol
Comments from author:
Well, Tuck was pretty loyal so long as he had venison and booze, so it's certainly possible. I agree that the staff/broomstick fighting style would be pretty handy.

Thanks for the stuggestions!

Holy crap. That Knights of Byzantium thing at the end made me have an "Oh Shit!!!" moment. I look forward to the rest of this story with great excitement. I always thought the KoB didn't get enough screen time. They showed up once or twice during the 5th Season and it was just them getting their collective asses handed to them by Glory or Buffy. I also thought that their cause was good, the only snare being that the Key was Dawn. If it had been in it's original form, then I don't think that they would have been antagonists. Probably not allies to the Scooby crew, but definitely not antagonists.
Comments from author:
I agree on them probably not being antagonists if it weren't for Dawn. IT'S ALL DAWN'S FAULT! Not really, but I thought it would be interesting having Harry join a group other than the Scobbies. I don't really like Harry the Vampire stories, so the Order of Aurelius was out and Harry the Lawyer was a little absurd. So this is what I came up with. I hope people like it.

Review:
This is a great story, but I have a couple of questions.

Couldn't Harry get another wand from another wandmaker, or try to make his own? Just because his was snapped, there's no law that says he can't get another outside of England.

As to him being expelled; well, does the Wizengamot have the right to deny him an education? He could go to another school, like Beaubaxton's, or Salem Academy if he wants a formal education.

Although, I like the idea of homeschooling for him. This way he gets to study what he feels he needs to learn, and not stick with someone else's curriculum.

It's great that he starts buying up the businesses in Diagon Alley; it's a fresh angle.

How about buying up other people's debts? That would really hurt 'em.

Maybe you could have Dobby talk to other house elves, and get the skinny on what their masters and mistresses are like, to see who would be a good ally for Harry.
Comments from author:
A lot of people have asked about the wand, or finding a new wand. In theory, yes, he could get something outside of Britain, if he knew where to look, if people would let him leave.

I would say yes to the Wizengamot being able to deny him. That's pretty much what they were trying to do by having him break the International Statute of Secrecy. Since it's an international law, I think they would have the power to do so.

He will be mostly homeschooled.

Yeah, economics are a powerful force. They'll keep him in power and raking in the dough while getting a bit of revenge. While the debts angle is a good idea, I'm not sure if it would work with this story. I'll think about it.

I most likely won't be using Dobby for this.

The Knights of Byzantium have clerics who were called to bring down the barrier that Willow raised to stop them entering the petrol(gas) station. Maybe they have knowledge and the resources to train Harry to use his magic wandlessly ...

Anyway, a great start to what looks to be an interesting story. In thanks for this chapter - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxOoapCsD1w
Comments from author:
I thought about that, and yeah, there will be a little of that. There will be some other things as well.

Thanks for reading and the music.

HO-LEE-SHIT. This just might be my new favorite fanfic. This is a FANTASTIC idea! Is Harry going to wear the classic robe and floppy hat when he starts learning wandless magic to "get in the right mood?" I can't wait for your next update!
Comments from author:
While the Gandalf persona is a good one, it won't work for this Harry. I think he's much more likely to wear Lincoln Green and keep his hood up. He's going to be somewhat similar to the Harry we know, but different.

Very interesting chapter. I think my favorite part was when Ron and Hermione had that confrontation in Gryffindor tower. I completely agree that super!Harry and Weasley bashing is over done and lame. Harry buying up the vital Hogwarts parts of Diagon Alley was a great idea. I am a fan of LARP, though I've never done it before. You are really onto something here. It's wonderful to see something new. Well, happy writing!
Comments from author:
I really saw Hermione and Ron stepping up to the plate when not protected by Harry's presence. They're both strong in their own right, Hermione more so in my opinion, Ron can be quite a prat at times, so I wanted them to lead at Hogwarts.

LARP has as many variations as there are clouds in the sky. Anything from American Civil War reinactment to pretending to be vampires or werewolves to fighting each other with live steel and armor when trying to take down the "orcs" on the other side of a plywood "battlement." If you're with a good group it can be great, incredible even. But you have to have the right group.

I'll admit, I hesitated. I don't know, something about the title made me pause. But I came in, read it, and love it. As everyone has been telling you, it's a refreshing draft of water after all the thick mud that we have been swallowing for so long - the over-trodden ground. Glad to hear you're not going there. Looking forward to seeing where this does go. I too was misled by the 'rattan' clue, but love the idea of them being the K. of B. Can't wait to see how all of this turns out! Thanks for sharing, love xx Shezzi
Comments from author:
Well, I figured that there must have been a time when the Knights learned their skills, so I figured this was a possible way of doing that. And really, you can't always practice with live steel in a public park. I'll try to keep it fresh as possble.

That was awesome!
Your characterization of Hermione was perfect, and while the start was a little shaky, that ending was fantastic! I never would have guessed in a million years where this was going. I can't wait to see what happens next! (Though no matter how much Harry is embittered by his experiences and enjoys his new life, I can't see him trying to kill Dawn. The Scoobies, maybe, but not Dawn, she can't help what she is, and unlike the other knights, I think he'd make that distinction.)
Anyway, I'm really loving this. Whoah, not at all what I was expecting.
Comments from author:
Thanks. I worked pretty hard to get the characterization right for the most part. I agree that the beginning was a bit shaky. I tried to straighten it up a bit, but it didn't work all the way.

On Dawn, I'm not talking. Not at all.

Nice start looks to be semi new at the least and if you stick with your posted rules it should go fairly well w/o a big bomb showing up killing your plot.
Comments from author:
Thanks, and what I've got written has kept pretty closely to my rules, even if I skirt pretty close to a few at times.

Review:
This was excellent! New twist in the stories; liked the slow change of Harry's attitude as time passed. Him finding the re creationists and their activities is new, hope to see more on this ASAP and your Muses provide.

One of the things that did occur to me is that with Hermione's new attitude, she's going to be a major target for Umbridge fast - and I wouldn't doubt that a pre arranged attack leaving her raped, broken, and partially mind wiped would be one of the first things occurring to the scum bags. And with Dumbledore's typical, gutless behavior, nothing would be done to even investigate the attack. HOPING that she and a bunch of others - even some teachers ought to be sick of the crap by now!! - have the brains to move n packs, ready for attacks...

Also wondering about the further consequences of Harry's economic warfare. Seems to me that a lot of the Pureblood wealth has come from the shops, whether as part of an investment, coersion, or whatever, so they should start to feel th bite fairly soon after school starts - say, around Christmas or so...
Comments from author:
I'm glad you liked it. Hermione will start butting heads with the Toad, but it won't be as bad as you say. Umbridge is going to feel more arrogant since they just "won" against Harry, so she won't resort to such a thing. Besides such a thing could be traced back to her, so she'd be cruel in other ways.

I'm doing Dumbledore a bit different from how many have portrayed him. I hope people like him.

Random closings might just shake Diagon Alley up just enough to get things going.
