Review of chapter "XXVI -- An Ending To An Adventure" from WebSpyder
Review:
I always enjoy your work but this was something else. While my favorite ERB work was the Caspak trilogy, you've definitely inspired me to go back and re-read the Mars series. As you seem to make some of the most interesting x-overs work, have you ever read E.E. "Doc" Smith's Skylark series? That's one of my favorite classic sci-fi series. As long as you're talking about classic sci-fi x-overs though, you could fit Buffy into any of them if Heinlein's Lazarus Long decided to give Buffy a ride. Could also explain large time-span jumps without resorting to using the death/resurrection plot again. I thought it was brilliant when you used to for Enigma but felt a little cheated when you reused it here. Otherwise this was a wonderful read.
Comments from author:
Thanks for the kind words. Actually I thought the wake up in coffin ending worked better here than in Born Again considering how the original Princess of Mars ended. I do understand your complaint though and if I could've of come up with a better method I probably would've used it.

I really didn't like Lazurus Long, but Buffy Summers Mobile Infantry I could get behind!

I loved Caspek as well. Have you read Beyond the Farthest Star? That's some ERB that most people don't know about.

And finally...Doc Smith. Buffy versus Blackie DuQuesne has potential, but could you imagine Dawn with a Lens?

EDIT: And Starship/Troopers/Buffy Crossover is done. Garbed in Steel.

Wow. I just found this two days ago, and I had a pretty hard time stopping to eat, sleep and actually accomplish things. Obviously, part of what makes it so good is the source material, but you've done a really good job shifting it over to Buffy's point of view, as well. I think there were a few bits that seemed off, particularly earlier, but I'm having a hard time remembering any problems now. Oh, I know; in about the fourth chapter or so you have her use Lorquas Ptomel's name when prior to that she'd shown no sign of knowing it; a short reference to finding that out would be good, or it could come up in the earlier chapter along with Tars'. Also, in the second-last chapter and an earlier chapter title you use 'breath' when you probably mean 'breathe'. Those are both little stuff though. In any case, I'm definitely looking forward to the sequel, whenever that should happen, and meanwhile I might have to check out what else you've written. Keep writing, whatever it might be!

Wonder what the impact of allowing the majority of the Zodangan military to leave Helium rather than be slaughtered will have on future events, especially since in ERB's original, the Zodangan's, whose army gets slaughtered outside of Helium in the original, spends a good chunk of the remaining books trying to get revenge.

Would love to see Buffy deal with the Therns and Pirates, especially since she has already faced and defeated a "real" Hell Goddess in Glory, along with such foes as the Master, the Mayor and Adam (and also potentially The First if her "return" is post Chosen), all of whom would make the Holy Hekkador and Isis wet their pants in terror.
Comments from author:
Honestly, was Buffy ever really scared during this story? She knew she could beat any individual or small group on Mars. She was more worried about what might happen to others or if she had to fight while vastly outnumbered.

The Therns and the truth about Iss will be interesting.

Wonderful and magnificent story! I could write paragraphs praising your story but it is your and ERB's writings that are important and not mine. Once again, several of your Buffy's statements made me stop reading for a moment to get myself back under control. One was: "lastly two people wrapped in red silk like mummies by Victoria's Secret." What a perfect description of Barsoomian fancy dress. I can't wait for the sequel.

When you started this, I knew it would be fun, but had no idea it would turn out this well. Congratulations !!
Comments from author:
I didn't think it would work this well until I got to Chapter IV and really got into the groove of ERB's style of writing for the Martians.

Buffy saves the world once again! And at the cost of her life too. Does this count as an extra death for her? I think that is number four or something? Anyway, well done Buffy, Mars is better for you having lived there :)
Comments from author:
Yeah four sounds about right

Setting the whole thing during Buffy's time in 'heaven' is perfect. Very well done, indeed!
Comments from author:
To meet the Challenge requirements and still allow for the possibility of the second two books it had to be that way.

Review:
Good work by Buffy on saving at least some of the Zodangians. I wonder if they will be happy with her for giving them warning that their home was burning or mad that she is the reason their families were slaughtered and their home destroyed? Looks like Dejah's family has learned from the example of the Jeddark of Zodanga and will not be staniding in Buffy's way. Plus she did save their city :)
Comments from author:
It will be a massive change in the plot of the original sequels. So you will (eventually) see the aftereffects.

First, I demand a sequel. I really cannot wait for the buffyized version of "Gods of Mars".
Second, I had really hoped that you would change the ending, because the prologue hinted that Buffy did not return to Earth.
Comments from author:
Which death was the prologue referring to hmmm? I was planning on a sequel from the beginning and a post-Season 7 Buffy is an appropriately powerful character for Books 2 and 3.

Review:
And next...she wakes up in her coffin back on earth? Strange she didn't contact Giles directly after that, but probably didn't have the heart to get back into slaying. Hopefully post-S5 Buffy is immortal as it'll be quite a while before she can get back, based on the books.
Comments from author:
She can't remember anything but the happiness.

Another great chapter. Buffy really knows how to win a war without a battle. I think that a marriage and an egg will come next. And if I am not completely wrong a differend ending that the novel.

I'm sure the Zodangan commanders in the tent were all thinking the same thing: that waitress is getting no tip! Still-- who said violence never solves anything?
At this point it's all good, except for that pesky atmosphere plant of course. But what could possibly go wrong?
