Review of chapter "Waking Up Dead" from plume
Review:
If Wes wants to die that bad, all he needs is a guillotine. It's fairly common, not rube-goldbergesque, and should be available in a city museum. All he has to do is put his head on the chopping block, make sure the blade is sharp, and pull a string. End of dilemma (and fic, really).

Review of chapter "Plans and Preparation" from (Recent Donor)jedibuttercup
Review:
How refreshing to read a critic of Buffy that (a) recognizes her problems but (b) acknowledges his own problems as well and thus doesn't rush to endorse the coup option. I'll be interested to see where you go with that storyline.
Comments from author:
I never understood the mentality behind the coup, really. It seemed to come from left feild.

Review of chapter "Father Caleb" from CageFire
Review:
Pretty great story so far, I'll be looking forward to reading more. I assume we're getting towards the end, at least if you only follow the tv canon. I think I heard about some comics that followed up, but I don't really know what happens in them.
Comments from author:
The comics can burn in hell, as far as I'm concerned. :D

Review of chapter "Father Caleb" from Gulanticus
Review:
I agree that while shorter, it was a good place to end the chapter. Is there a reason you chose the characters not to shoot Caleb in the head?
Comments from author:
It wouldn't have done anything.

Review of chapter "Father Caleb" from SamJames
Review:
Aye, right after the scene where Caleb fails to remove Xander's eye? Was that deliberate? Very clever!

I like seeing this more amoral Wesley and the slightly more redeemed Lilah. But I liked the first 2/3rds of the story better with the new Wesley take on the Angel events. Now as it shifts into the last season of Buffy, I fear it is failing victim to the flaw of rewrite crossovers. We know from the series that Buffy and her team were able to win, now you have Buffy's team, plus Angel's team, plus two Immortals against a foe Buffy and her team alone were able to defeat. (Yes you made Caleb an Immortal too, but that just changes the direction of Buffy's final stroke.) Where's the suspense?
Comments from author:
Well, there's no suspense ever on the show in the first place - we know full well that the good guys will win in the show anyway.

And the First Evil does have an understanding of the concept of escalation, don't worry.

Review of chapter "Father Caleb" from AllenPitt
Review:
For a minute there I thought Faith was going to get killed (it'd be an interesting question, which Potential would then get 'Chosen'? Or maybe one not even in Sunnydale...) - And now, despite the whole dark quickening risk, I really kind of hope Wesley gets Caleb's. It'd be interesting, you have to admit.
Xander not losing an eye, good.
Assuming they now realize that they need guns...where the heck are they going to get them? Maybe raid the military base? Not sure that's a good idea, Xander was wildly lucky to get away with that rocket launcher, my bet is security has been improved. Hm. If the whole town is empty, that means the police station is also? Lotsa guns there, I bet.
Comments from author:
You'll have to wait and see on Caleb death. Same with the guns. :P

Review of chapter "Return to the Hellmouth" from CrystalBlaze
Review:
I think Wes respects Buffy's instincts when she's got her head on straight, but feels she lets her drama override her instincts all too often.

The First--source of the Dark Quickening? Hoo boy.

I also think that, if the girls decide to kick out Buffy and anoint Faith leader, she'll kick one of them in the groin and leave with Buffy.. along with Wesley, Lilah, and the Fang Gang.
Comments from author:
Possibly. But more, I think - especially this, darker, grimmer Wes - he doesn't think she ever has her head screwed on straight.

No comment on how things with the 'kick out buffy thing' goes down. Though I never liked how it happened in the show.

Review:
No problem---Wesley has reason to dislike Buffy, same for Angel. He's giving his opinion, not Revealed Truth. And hey, everybody has flaws including Buffy, Angel, everybody. The vineyard was a trap, sure, but... B was also right. What do they do, not attack? Then what? Doing nothing doesn't help much. They went in with their big guns, and it turned out to not be enough.. It happens.
Anyway--hopefully with the Templates et al, they'll get an idea of what the Amulet does; using it blind was true desperation in the series.
One thing that was kind of weird--the Initiative was bugging B's phone. To the extent she once picked it up, didn't dial and asked to speak to Riley--someone answered. How come they didn't send any troops in? Or at least get asked to? Bullets work on 'bringers.
Comments from author:
Because Buffy is an idiot on the subject. She hates guns instinctively, and she wouldn't be able to control any troops sent in. Besides, the Initiative probably left a bad taste in her mouth for military action on the Hellmouth.

I chalk it up to Joss not wanting to do it, and Buffy's general short-sightedness.

Review:
Caleb's an Immortal?

Too bad that I don't think Lilah taking his head would be a good idea; from what I recall of Immortals, there is such a thing as a 'Dark Quickening', and Caleb's Quickening would probably REALLY overwhelm Lilah given her already ambiguous moral stance...

That said, interesting chapter so far, and I generally can't FAULT Wesley's assessment of Buffy as having made mistakes, even if her continued survival reflects that she must be doing SOMETHING right (And I can think of a couple of occasions where her insight did save the day, such as when she realised the anomalies about the kids in 'Gingerbread').
Comments from author:
Very good point. Unfortunately, I can make no comment on the fate of Caleb's quickening.

I agree - Wesley is looking at it from a decidedly negative POV. Buffy has done things right, and at the very least, she does end up saving the world, a lot, but Wesley looks at it from a 'and when will her luck run out?' perspective. He really doesn't like buffy.

Review:
well, the note at the end is nice for explaining, but it doesn't really explain Wes jumping from one side to another during the debate at the end. First he's all Buffy has no tactical sense because she's walking into ab obvious trap, then he's you can't stay in the house forever and you have to answer turn the trap against them. Which you can't do if you don't go into it.

Also, using Angel as a reason you can't redeem yourself in jail doesn't really work. Before he actively started trying to redeem himself he spent a good chunk of time living on the streets eating rats.
Comments from author:
Angel stopped doing that though, which proves the point.

Wesley wants to go at the the enemy for entire differant reasons than Buffy - Buffy because she's impatient and impulsive, Wesley because it makes tactical sense, given how little they know and the needs of the wider conflict.

Review of chapter "Wrapping Up" from ScreamingFlamingos
Review:
I like this darker/"greyer" wesley, just don't make him too dark! The parts of your story I liked the best were the immortal/highlander bits. When we finally get past the Beast part, can Lilah and
Wes finally be done with Angel? What about making their way up to seacover? Wes and Methos would get along great!!!! And then Wes can be annoyed by the "Boyscout" together with Methos and Lilah!
Can't wait to see what happens next!
Comments from author:
They're going to Sunnydale, as you might notice.

And this fic will not feature Duncan McCloud or Methos or any of them. One of the shorter sequels I have planned might.

Thanks for the review! Glad you liked it.

Review:
Another Immortal on the Hellmouth? Interesting. Possibilities... well, Buffy was resurrected, maybe that made her into one? (unlikely, yep) .. One of the potentials, maybe? Or an Immortal from the tv series. Methos would be fun. Faith getting out via legal machinations, funny. Jumping out the window was more impressive. But escaped convict, not as much fun as paroled, I suppose.
IS Roger dead? A fake-Roger-cyborg visited in the S5, but I suppose R. could have been dead, with Wesley just not knowing about it.
I'm hoping Giles & company will be suitably surprised by how changed Wesley is from the bumbling incompetent they remember. Hm, the Potentials would regard him as a Watcher up there with Giles... (and -ok, all these potentials were sent, how come NONE of their watchers accompanied them? I know, 'budget', but in the slayer-verse, what reason? Were they all hiding out hoping the First would only kill the potentials, not them?!)
Comments from author:
I was under the impression that some of the potentials had already lost their watchers or didn't have any - they'd been found and sent on while the rest of the watchers did what they could to find more.

Roger Wyndam-Pryce is indeed dead. In the show, Wesley called him at the end of the episode, so we know he's alive, but not here. Here the bastard gets what he deserves.

As for what the Scooby Gang will think...well, we'll see, shall we?

Thanks for the review!
