Review:
"Usually, most Halloween fics go for the 'Buffy gets a truckload of superpowers, in addition to the ones she already has.'"

*nod* Some of that, I think, stems from the "Wow! Wouldn't it be kewl if... ?!" syndrome. Nothing wrong with that, a lot of good fanfic comes from that impulse. Some, though, comes from a lack of thinking through the tropes and themes involved in the Halloween episode, a lot of which is wish fulfillment and subconcious desires of the characters coming through the costumes: Buffy really wants to be "just a normal girl" so she takes on a non-powered personae, Willow prefers to fade into the background and avoid attention/the limelight so she takes on the ghost aspects, Xander wants to be the hero and competent... etc.

Plus there's the mechanics of the episode: if you want to keep the same basic plot, then the characters have to keep some of their roles, else one'd better be ready to write an almost completely original episode. (Have someone other than Willow be able to provide the clue to Ethan's, recognise Xander and Buffy, provide a reason to get them all to Buffy's house and Giles etc.)

"And I certainly hope you can get back to writing your Kane crossover, because there aren't nearly enough of those type of stories out there."

Thanks. It's a matter of getting back to where I can physically write and post; I've been without a computer of my own since around March of '09, so it's been near impossible to do much on that score. As a consequence, I have a really large chunk of a 5-section notebook filled with story notes, plot hooks, and episode outlines for both of my main series - Roadverse and Nightwatchmen - and a buttload of one-offs and YAHF plot bunnies to play with when I can get to them.

I'll probably end up just tackling whatever I'm most inspired at when I get back to writing, and get to the others as I work my way down the list.
Comments from author:
Yeah, big changes generally require rewriting a good bit of the Halloween episode, and figuring out who to get to the same general end point by an entirely different route.

And it's good to hear that you're still working on your stories, even if you can't complete them at the moment. ;-)

Looking forward to seeing whatever you want to post, once you can start doing so, again.

Review:
Interesting. And neat. ;)

I like the use of a relatively obscure real noblewoman (Maria Gaetana Agnesi) for Buffy's Halloween dress personae. And impressed that you managed to find one that I'd never even heard of. Damn, and I thought *I* had a mind full of eclectic historical trivia. Definite hat's off to you here. I've had in mind for some time, for when I'm able to get back to writing, of doing something similar, using "Émilie du Châtelet" for Buffy's costume personae. Apparently, warped minds think similarly. :)

It's also cool to see a YAHF that doesn't treat Buffy and Willow as complete wastes of breathable air. I personally dislike both characters, but Buffy/Willow bashing in Xander-centric YAHF fics does get a bit old after awhile: it's been done unto undeath.

Kane is an interesting choice for Xander's costume. Has potential to be overpowering if you're not careful with it, but could be fascinating if you handle it well. Just trying to deal with the remnants of Kane's personality and memories could cause Xander tons of grief to counterbalance Kane's skills and experience. Karl Edward Wagner's Kane was NOT a nice man. (And it is nice to encounter someone else who's read those stories. Kind of a rarity in my experience, sadly.)

Seems I've run across the "Enchanted/Charmed spinoff" concept elsewhere, but I can't place it. Maybe in one of your other stories? Should provide a useful set of skills and outlook change for Cordy. Be nice to see her and Xander hook up together here, possibly a bit earlier and a bit less umm... explosively than they did in canon?

Giles as bad guy should be fun also. I've always thought he had great potential as a villain, but few authors that I've read so far seem to take him that direction.

I'd had a Kane x-over in mind for some time for when I get back to writing, once I've had a chance to reread those and re-familiarize myself with the character. It'll be interesting to see what different treatments we manage to come up with.

Nice work. I'll look forward to future installments.

Edit: PS - Merry Christmas. :)
Comments from author:
Glad you're enjoying the story, and I'm especially glad you recognized and appreciated exactly who Maria was.

Usually, most Halloween fics go for the 'Buffy gets a truckload of superpowers, in addition to the ones she already has.' I decided to give her some inspiration for her to use the intelligence that Joss established she possesses (1420 SAT scores), but which she seemed to have no inclination to actually use.

And, since mathematics describes the basic framework of the universe we exist in, it will allow me to have Buffy coming up with hopefully new and innovative methods and practices to incorporate into the Slaying. ;-)

I also generally try to avoid unnecessary character bashing for most characters, and try to have everyone get a positive result from the costumes they chose.

And yes, Kane was NOT a nice person, by any method of accounting one might use. If you'll recall, in the first story of the series, 'Marked By Kane', I had Xander describe Kane as: "He was a monster. He was as bad as anything we've ever faced, Buff. Not even the Master was as bad he was." And yes, it will be interesting to see how Xander will have to deal with the aftermath of having a portion of Kane's memories in his head. ;-)

All I'll say about the others' costumes is that things are going to get interesting, real soon now. ;-)

Considering Giles' implied background regarding Ripper, I'm surprised that there weren't many more negative consequences showing up to screw things up for the Scoobies, so I decided that I'd take a peek into some possible results. ;-)

And I certainly hope you can get back to writing your Kane crossover, because there aren't nearly enough of those type of stories out there.

And a belated Merry Christmas to you, too. ;-)

Oh, brother!! That bit of reincarnating Kane is going to have all sorts of lasting influences and methinks Rupert Giles is going to be most surprised by how matters turn out.

I'm quite looking forward to more chapters.
Comments from author:
Giles isn't the only who's going to be cursing Ethan before this storyline is done. ;-)

Thanks for reviewing.

Hmm. I’m a bit leery of Giles playing the part of a villain, but you seem to be handeling it well so far. This looks really promising.
Comments from author:
Well, I've only seen one story where he was a villain, so I decided to make it work fro me this time around.

Thanks for reviewing.

Review of chapter "Chapter Two" from Gideon
Review:
Sounds like Xander gets a lot from the ritual, as will Willow and Cordelia, but what will Buffy get? The ability to do well at algebra? It seems like she has got most of her costume's interest in that area already so I am interested to see what the outcome of the ritual will be for her.
Comments from author:
Everyone got something useful from their costumes. Buffy's is just less overtly evident.

She was shown to be intelligent (her SATs were 1430, or somewhere around there), but she was still somewhat unfocused when it came to applying her intelligence to non-combat aspects, primarily because of her being Called as the Slayer. Having experienced Maria's interest in mathematics has shown Buffy not only the beauty of math and abstract thought, but how it can be used to accomplish practical applications in the world around her.

And math is one way to describe how the world around you actually functions, so applying those principles to the world she deals with can have some interesting ramifications for herself, her friends, and the beings they have to deal with. ;-)
