Review of chapter "Chapter Two" from (Current Donor)kedrann
Review:
Sincomakti indeed... as a long time Call of Cthulhu player, I feel rather ashamed not to have seen this until I read your note at the end of the chapter.

As another reviewer pointed, it's true that Buffy has only limited knowledge and she makes by without a guide for now. As an old D&D grognard and proud geek, I tend to forget that all the small bits of knowledge about various myths and creatures I gathered during a quarter century of playing are not known by most people...

Well, thanks for writing this and hoping to see the next chapter in the near future.
Comments from author:
I thought the name was really strange when I first saw it -- it just didn't seem to fit the overall milieu of Ustalav. Then it hit me, cue eye roll.

Yeah, D&D gives you so much random, strangely useful knowledge. She knows how to get by -- a season 6 Buffy is not only experienced, but she survived most of the season without Giles to help her with research, but she's still not used to being alone, and everything in Golarion is a little different than she's used to.

Thanks for the review! I'm still writing away, and tomorrow will see the next chapter come out. In a few minutes though I'm off to run a 4e D&D game -- my party is at 18th and exploring the Tomb of Horrors. I'm sure my players will be grateful for the good mood reading your new chapter and then your review have put me in.

Review of chapter "Chapter Two" from Dilvish
Review:
Interesting. Since the summary mentions a sudden death, I wonder if the vampire is going to turn Buffy. Turning a slayer who's linked to Yog-Sothoth would be a really, really bad idea, in my opinion.

Update as soon as you can.
Comments from author:
Thank you. It would be especially bad since Golarion's vamps are as inherently evil as Buffy's, but with way more powers. As for updates, I'm planning on putting out a chapter every monday and friday -- I have enough backlog to support that for a bit, and my current writing pace should keep up with it anyway. With a combination of luck and a kind muse I should be able to put out the whole story at that rate. Thanks again!

Review:
I really like D&D/Buffy crossovers. Especially those with Buffy as the central character - let's face it: Xander or Willow would have at least a passing familiarity - the only other characters in the show as out of touch with nerd culture are Angel (please not...), Giles and possibly Anya. Therefore, Buffy will have to figure out the rules of the universe herself - which you showed nicely in this chapter: reluctant looting, rewards for side quests and researching the local fauna.
I'm curious where you're going with this: will Buffy find her typical adventuring party? Will she abandon her search for a way home along the way? What about those in Buffy's home dimension - what's Willow's fate? I know you're showing us in the next chapters - no need to answer in the review:-)

Thanks for writing,
Just in Jest

Thanks for the review! You're the first since the new chapter came out, and maybe I was spoiled on all the good things people said about my first chapter but I was feeling a bit anxious. I usually prefer crossovers where the characters are unaware of the setting they are crossing into -- anything else just feels odd to me, although I have read some really good ones that do otherwise.

Thanks again for the review!

Comments from author:
Thank you. I'm a regular gamer myself -- I felt comfortable enough with the setting to write this because I had been prepping a game in it, actually.

Review:
Very interesting.

I'm not really familiar with Golarion (yet) as I currently use Pathfinder for other settings. From what I gathered while playing Second Darkness, the world has been well-thought and I look forward to see how this turns out and she adapts and evolves.

I see that we have similar ideas considering Dawn though I rather spun it the other way around, having the Lovecraft living in the Buffyverse using Yog-Sothoth as a metaphor for the Key.

I will definitely stay tuned.
Comments from author:
Thank you. Golarion is a great little setting, and I actually have three fully formed bunnies in my head set in it -- this is just the one I felt best prepared for, so here we are.

Yog-Sothoth is actually stated as a deity in Golarion (CN in alignment), and it and other Lovecraftian entities have some noteworthy influence over Ustalav. It just jumped out at me and I grabbed onto it.

I'm glad you like it -- reading your planescape story is what made me decide to tackle a Buffy/Pathfinder cross. Expect an update later this week.

Wow... I'm ashamed of her not taking the magical bracers... hopefully she'll go back for them... wait maybe that's just too many years of playing RPGS... nice story though I feel bad for Dawn, Willow and Buffy... :(
Comments from author:
Yeah, she had bigger fish to fry. Don't worry about those bracers though -- as we saw with the sword demon during her birthday episode, she doesn't mind looting cool stuff from foes she slays, and she hasn't left town quite yet...

Spiffing. Absolutely spiffing. As a Buffy fan, an old school AD&Der, and all around nerd... lovely.

I look forward to seeing where you take this
Comments from author:
Thank you -- I'm a bit of a grognard myself (I first rolled a d20 more than 20 years ago). I hope I can live up to your expectations -- I have big plans, so as long as my muse holds out, I should have quite a bit to say.

Review:
Interesting story so far. I'm eager to see where you're going with this.

On a side note, I thought you might be interested to know that I once calculated Buffy's strength score. In the season six episode where the trio mess with her attempts to get a job, she is shown carrying an I-beam and treating it as what D&D calls a light load. This would indicate that she has a strength score of at least 35. I would expect her dexterity to be similarly ridiculously high. Though, things get odd when you realize that her constitution is well within the human range. Not sure how she stands up to hits by demons though... Damage reduction that doesn't work when she's flatfooted? Actually, I'd be interested in seeing how you stat her up... but I'm a giant D&D nerd so that's to be expected.

Anyway, good work so far. I look forward to more.
Comments from author:
While I haven't put together her whole sheet, I had some basic thoughts on a 'slayer' template, something along these lines:

Low-light vision
Detect Evil (at will)
Natural Armor +6
Speed +10ft
+20 STR, +8 DEX, +4 CON
+8 racial bonus to Stealth and Perception
Slayers are considered proficient with all weapons
Feats: Alertness, Combat Reflexes, Dodge, Improved Initiative, Iron Will, Lightning Reflexes, and Toughness as bonus feats

The feats are from the vampire template, as is the level of Natural Armor and some of the Skill Bonuses. The STR was chosen to let her lift somewhere in the range of a 1 ton when added to an average human, which I felt was the bare minimum she should be able to lift. The DEX is a little better than a vampire, and Detect Evil as defined in Pathfinder fits what she does pretty well actually, and she should at least have Low Light Vision.

I was thinking of having her be approximately a 4th level/4th level Fighter (unarmed fighter) / Rogue (swashbuckler), but don't hold me to any of that. Mostly, I'm just keeping that all in mind to help me balance things and writing what feels right. I may stat her up properly at some point, we'll see.

Review of chapter "Chapter One" from Newford
Review:
Very nice writing. I only have a superficial understanding of D&D from playing it once many years ago and no knowledge of Pathfinder but I'm still enjoying your story a lot so far. Nice characterization, vivid descriptions of the locales and an exciting fight scene. Kudos for finding another way for Buffy to end up in a different dimension and also for following through with the effect of Dawn's not-quite-death on her.

Looking forward to the next chapter!
Comments from author:
Thank you. I'm trying to make knowledge of D&D/Pathfinder be unnecessary to enjoy the story. If I lose you with anything, please tell me in a Review.

As for Dawn's quasi-death, it'll be a while, but that will eventually come back into play.

Very well written, great info provided and I have always LOVED a good DnD/Pathfinder crossover. Thank you for your work!
Comments from author:
Thank you, I've practically been on the edge of my seat waiting for my first review on this site. I've gone from anxious to relieved in just two short sentences. I think I'll get back to writing now (I'm halfway through the sixth chapter, although to keep some lead-time I'm planning on posting two chapters a week).
